A Vietnamese board game, shared with the world

Play ô ăn quan, Vietnam’s mancala game

Oanquan brings ô ăn quan to your browser: a Vietnamese board game in the mancala family, where every handful opens a new possibility. Its relay moves, captures across empty pits and large quan pieces have their own rules. Learn a familiar courtyard game, then share a table with friends near or far.

The classic board has two rows of five small pits and two large quan pits. Each small pit starts with five dân pieces.

How to play ô ăn quan

The classic board has two rows of five small pits and two large quan pits. Each small pit starts with five dân pieces.

  1. Choose and sow

Choose a nonempty small pit on your side. Pick up its dân and choose either direction. Place one piece in each following pit, including the large pits.

  2. Keep the relay going

When your hand is empty, look at the next pit. If it is an occupied small pit, pick up those pieces and continue. An occupied quan pit ends the relay.

  3. Capture across a gap

If the next pit is empty and the pit beyond contains pieces, capture that farther pit. You can repeat captures across single empty pits. Two empty pits stop the chain.

  4. Count your score

A dân is worth 1 point; a quan is worth 10 in this preset. An empty side is refilled with five dân at a cost of five points, even below zero.

The game ends when all large pits are empty or the 200-turn limit is reached. Remaining pieces on each side count toward that side’s score; the highest score wins. Traditional variants differ; optional young-quan protection requires five dân before a quan can be captured.

Make room for everyone

Choose 1v1, teams of 2v2, or three- and four-player tables. Create a room and share its code. Once matchmaking begins, the game starts when all seats are filled and everyone is ready, or after 60 seconds with computer players filling empty seats.

Eligible online ranked games, including ranked computer matches, can change your Elo. Local practice does not affect rankings.

Oanquan is currently free to play without ads. Choose from nine languages, country scenery and optional sound. Start with practice and open the in-game guide whenever you need it.
